First grade music at Cahaba Elementary is where the magic keeps growing!

Our first graders are busy matching pitch using solfege (do-re-mi), learning to read and clap out rhythms, and getting creative as they sing, dance, play instruments, and even compose their own little tunes! It’s a joyful, active space where students explore music in exciting, hands-on ways. Plus, they’ll get to show off their hard work and talent in a special winter performance for families and friends. Get ready to be amazed!

Second grade music at Cahaba Elementary takes things to the next level!

We’re still rocking our solfege skills (yes, we’re pros at do-re-mi now!), singing our hearts out, dancing like no one’s watching, and composing catchy little tunes. But now, we’re adding even more magic—like reading rhythms from quarter notes to whole notes, turning up the volume with dynamic expression, and jamming together in drum circles! It’s all about learning through play, creativity, and teamwork. Be sure to catch our winter performance... it’s going to be a show full of heart, rhythm, and smiles!

Third grade music at Cahaba is full of exciting new challenges and musical adventures!

We’re stretching our solfege muscles with even more pitches (high do), learning to read and play those super-speedy sixteenth notes, and recognizing the unique sounds—or timbres—of orchestral instruments. Our students are also composing their own melodies with musical elements like crescendo (get louder) and decrescendo (get softer). Plus, we dive into the magic of partner singing—where two different melodies come together in harmony. It’s all leading up to our big Fall performance, where our third graders will wow you with their growing talent and creativity!

Fourth grade music at Cahaba is where things really start to click and get exciting!

Students are connecting their solfege skills to the musical alphabet on the staff (goodbye mystery notes ), tackling trickier rhythms with eighth and sixteenth notes, and spotting musical forms like pros! They’re composing and performing with both pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments, and learning to sing in rounds and canons with beautiful harmony! We also dive into the fun and tradition of folk dancing, building coordination, community, and cultural connections through movement. At the end of the year, they’ll showcase their skills with a special performance. PLUS—fourth graders can take the spotlight by trying out for our show choir SHINE in the fall or joining our awesome Musical Theater Enrichment class! Let the music magic continue!

Fifth grade music at Cahaba is a grand finale of elementary music—and it's packed with amazing experiences!

Our fifth graders are solfege and musical alphabet masters, confidently reading and playing complex rhythms including syncopation. They’re creating their own Orff arrangements, exploring musical forms with bucket drums, ukuleles, and barred instruments, and learning to sing in beautiful harmony. We also dive into the fun and tradition of folk dancing, building coordination, community, and cultural connections through movement. It’s all designed to get them ready for the exciting world of middle school band, choir, and theater!

They’ll show off their skills in a special end-of-year performance, and they also have the chance to shine even brighter by trying out for our show choir SHINE and joining our awesome Musical Theater Enrichment class. Fifth grade rocks—and we’re going out with a musical bang!
